New electronic devises are being manufactured and sold by the minute, in 2013 the U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts shows that the U.S. alone spent over $215 billion on electronic devices. But what happens to those devices when we have outgrown them or they become obsolete? A large portion of these devices will immediately end up in the garbage, and others are stored away for years before ultimately making their journey into the garbage as well.

Current estimates from U.S. recyclers and watchdog groups estimate that 50% or more of the United States used computers, cellphones, and electronics sent to recyclers are shipped overseas for recycling. Without proper recycling programs all of these devices will end up as toxic waste, with hazardous components exposed, burned, or allowed to fill landfills.

Electronic waste (e-waste), and why recycling is important

What is Electronic Waste, or E-waste? The simple answer is any discarded electronic or electrical device or their parts. Many components of these devices are considered toxic and are not biodegradable meaning that these items will not break down naturally and require human intervention to be disposed of properly.

It is easy to see why a responsible recycling program is necessary to ensure that devices that contain hazardous elements do not end up in landfills were they can pose a real and lasting threat to our natural environment and public health. From lead to mercury to cadium to arsenic, these devices must be disposed of safely and kept out of our landfills for future generations to come.
